Part One Talking about Health Club Facilities
C: Good evening, madam and sir. Welcome to our Health Center.
S1: Good evening. We're fond of exercises. Would you tell us something about the facilities here?
C: Yes, of course. We have a well-equipped gymnasium with the latest recreational sports apparatus. There is no fee for registered guests. Look! We have bar bell, dumb bell, spring grip, chest-expander, muscle builder set, and rowing machine. They're all for body building.
S1: Are these apparatuses imported or made in China?
C: Some of them are home-made, but most are imported. They're of the Universal Brand.
S2: That's a world-famous brand. But can you tell us some more details?
C: Certainly. We have got racing apparatus, stationary bike, slenderizor, and wall bars as well.
S1: I was wondering if there is a coach around here supervising the exercises?
C: Yes. The man standing over there is our resident coach. He supervises all the activities.
S2: That's great!
C: Would you like to have a try here, madam and sir?
S1: I'd like to use the race apparatus. What about you, Marilyn?
S2: Sorry, I'm not interested in it. What else is there to do for exercise?
C: Besides the gym, we have a billiard room, a squash court on the fifth floor, bowling center and mini-golf on the 3rd floor. They're all open from morning till midnight. In addition, we have an indoor swimming pool on the top floor. Also, there are some sauna rooms on the sixth floor. All these are ready to serve you at your convenience.
S2: Thank you for telling us. Since we're in China, can you recommend some traditional Chinese exercises to me?
C: Have you heard of Tai Ji Quan or Qi Gong exercises?
S2: We call Tai Ji Chinese Shadow Boxing. I've seen it on TV. Its movements are even and slow. I'm afraid I have no patience for it. What is Qigong?
C: It's a kind of breathing exercise.
S2: Is it similar to Indian Yoga exercise?
C: You are right, Ma'am. You are very knowledgeable.
S2: 0h, I'm flattered. So far as I know, it takes a long time to have a good command of it. I'm afraid we haven't enough time to learn it.
C: What a pity! I'm afraid I can't recommend anything more to you.
S1: In fact, you've done us a favor. You showed us around here, and taking a walk is a very good exercise. Thank you for your patient explanations.
C: It's the least I could do.
Part Two Sauna
C: Here are Hotel's sauna rooms (Pointing to the notice board) Those who have heart disease or high blood pressure are not allowed to take sauna, for their health's sake.
G: Thank you for telling me this. What should I do next?
C: First, change your shoes to slippers. Then walk up to the changing room to get prepared for a shower. After the shower, step into the wash room with a wooden pail of warm water and birch switches. You are supposed to dip them in the warm water and briskly whisk them over your skin. Then you enter the bath room proper you choose.
G: Yes.
C: In the Finnish sauna room, there's a stove in the sauna, fired with wood, and on top of the stove a pile of stones, which keep the heat. Throw some water on the stones, and dry steam is given off. In the Turkish bath room (also called a hararaca steam room), you are supposed to change the temperature on the thermometer.
G: Why should you have dry steam?
C: That is to step up the blood circulation and produce vigorous perspiration. You'll be sweating bullets. After ten minutes or so it's time to cool off under a shower or go for a quick swim.
G: Sounds crazy to me.
C: Actually it's fun. People usually go back into the bath room proper three times.
G: What happens then?
C: Then you wash yourself, or rather to be washed. And then you wrap yourself up in your sauna robe. You can have a manicure, a massage or solarium. But that will be charged. You can also take a snack, if you'd like it.
G: I see. Thank you for telling me.
G: My pleasure.
Part Three At the Indoor Swimming Pool
(Scene: Mrs Smith intends to swim at Jinling Hotel. So she goes to the hotel's indoor swimming pool.)
C: Welcome to our hotel's indoor swimming pool, madam. Would you like to have a swimming bath?
G: Yes, I'd love to. But I have no idea whether it'll be charged.
C: There's no fee for registered guests.
G: 0h, I'm still worried about whether the water is too cool to swim in.
C: You don't have to worry about it. Ours is a heated swimming pool.
G: Fantastic! You see, I am not a good swimmer. Can you tell me how deep the pool is?
C: Certainly, madam. The deepest place is 2.5 meters. You can swim in the shallow area, which is only one-meter in depth. We have separate locker rooms over there. You can use them free of charge. You can also have a shower there.
G: Can you give me the key to the locker? I can't wait to have a try.
C: Yes. Here you are.
G: 0h, the water is very clear. How often do you change the water?
C: We change it every other day. You don't need to worry about the hygienic condition. We just changed the water this morning.
G: That's good. How often is this swimming pool open?
C: It's open every day, usually from 9 o'clock in the morning till 11:00 p.m…… If you feel hungry, just relax yourself by having some soft drinks and cakes at the poolside bar.
G: Thank you. I'll do that.
C: Have fun. If you need something else, please don't haste to call me.
G: Thanks again.

Reading Material
Nowadays it is no longer true to say that the early bird catches the worm. People go out so early in the morning for exercise that worms, if they do come out, are all trampled to death. Indeed, public places like parks are often crowded in the morning with people who come here for exercise. They believe that the shortest way to stay healthy is to lead a healthy life.
A survey on the annual expenditure on sporting equipment would probably yield amazing results as the trend of getting oneself into shape sweeps the world. The modern theory is that fifteen minutes exercise a day, rather than an expensive apple heavily sprayed with insecticide, keeps the doctor away. And a man can choose the kind of exercise most suitable for him. While a young man likes ball games and running for their excitement, an old gentleman may find these sports too vigorous. He would prefer to take a leisurely walk or move gracefully in the traditional Tai Ji. Whatever sport one chooses, the most important point is to enjoy it moderately. It is better to progress gradually than to push one's body too hard and to moan over stretched muscles.
Prevention is better than cure. One should not hesitate to ask for advice from doctors. In some countries, including China, it is the national policy to insist on school children having regular check ups so that diseases can be detected early and cured before they get serious.
It is useless to rely on help from doctors if a person's health is threatened daily, by dirty rooms and polluted air. Therefore, everyone should try to maintain a hygienic environment and good living habits. Keeping the surroundings clean and leading a well regulated life are the first two things one has to bear in mind. The old saying, “Early to bed, early to rise, makes one healthy, wealthy and wise” is quite true. Start today, and tomorrow you will be a healthier man.
